How many majors for Rory McIlroy?

Just because you are mentioned in the same sentence as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods doesn’t mean you deserve to be mentioned.

But it doesn’t mean you don’t either.

McIlroy is 23. That is the same age that Nicklaus and Woods were when they won their second major.

The eight-stroke margin by McIlroy broke the PGA Championship record of seven set by Nicklaus.

But of course when you talk of Woods and Nicklaus you talk of total major championships and right now they are the only two in the conversation.

“It’s tough to say that Rory is a Tiger Woods-type player,” said fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell. “Tiger Woods is a once-in-a-lifetime type player, and Rory McIlroy is at least a once-in-a-decade type player. He’s that good.”

No one would disagree with that. But it doesn’t mean we can’t project. That is a national pastime for sports fans.
